Kansas Wheat estimates high yields of winter wheat

11 May 2016

Kansas Wheat completed its annual Hard Winter Wheat Tour through Kansas last week. Calculated yields were higher than anticipated and disease pressure was lower than expected. The tour found an average yield of 48.6 bushels per acre – up 13 bushels from last year. Yields haven’t been this high since 2003. There was also more acreage planted at this time last year. Planted acres this year are 8.5m. The tour’s projection for the amount of hard red winter wheat to be harvested in Kansas is 382.4m bushels.  Many fields have been treated with fungicide for stripe rust, as this was a big problem last year. Wheat is becoming a better managed crop, which is allowing the higher yields. The harvest is 30 to 45 days away from starting.
